Sexual Assault Awareness Month 2023
April 1 - April 30
MOCSA’s vision of a community free from sexual violence needs to include recognition of the diverse communities in our Greater Kansas City region, and the histories of marginalization, underservice, and injustice that exist. For the next three years, MOCSA’s campaign for Sexual Assault Awareness Month will focus on populations that are disproportionately impacted by sexual violence. Our goal is to expand outreach in our community and raise awareness about services available to survivors. In 2023, LGBTQIA+ is the community focus.
Even before its official declaration, SAAM was about both awareness and prevention of sexual assault, harassment, and abuse. Looking at the history of the movement to end sexual violence, it’s clear why: It’s impossible to prevent an issue no one knows about, and it’s difficult to make people aware of a problem without providing a solution. The two work in tandem, and they always have. From the civil rights movement to the founding of the first rape crisis centers to national legislation and beyond, the roots of SAAM run deep.
